What happened to Play.ht
If you're searching for a Play.ht alternative, you've probably found that the service is gone. Meta confirmed in July 2025 that it had acquired PlayAI, the company behind Play.ht, and TechCrunch reported an internal memo saying the entire team would join Meta. On July 30, 2025, the audio platform AudioStack told its customers that PlayHT had deprecated its voice API and TTS services.
Migration guides, including Murf's, say Play.ht shut down completely by December 31, 2025. An archived copy of the homepage shows an error page on January 6, 2026, and when we checked on October 21, 2026, the play.ht domain no longer pointed to any website. We couldn't find Play.ht's own shutdown notice still online, so any date beyond these comes from third parties.
If your audiobook files were on Play.ht
Since the Play.ht shutdown, the files you downloaded are what you have left, and they're yours. Play.ht offered WAV and MP3 downloads, so check your computer, cloud drives and project folders for exported chapters. Anything that only lived in your account, such as projects, unexported audio and voice clones, can't be reached through the site any more.
Third-party sites report that accounts and clones were deleted; we couldn't confirm that from a primary source. If you received emails from Play.ht or Meta in late 2025, search them for any notice or export instructions. Either way, the text is the part you can always rebuild from, so find the manuscript or the scripts you pasted in.
What to look for in a replacement for long-form narration
A Play.ht replacement for a podcast or a voice agent is a different shopping list from a Play.ht audiobook alternative. For books, check five things: that the tool imports your book file and keeps the chapters; that it can give characters distinct voices, ideally without casting every line by hand; that you can regenerate one line without redoing a chapter; that it exports chapters, as an M4B with markers or a file per chapter; and that the plan you'd pay for includes commercial use.
The shutdown adds a sixth: keep local copies. Export each chapter as you finish it and store the audio and the manuscript yourself, whichever playht alternative you choose.
Rebuilding a book project: text, cast, chapters
Start from the text, not the old audio. In FullCastBook, a Play.ht alternative built for books, upload the EPUB, PDF, DOCX, TXT or Markdown file; chapters and speakers are detected, and you check the cast. Then write a short casting sheet of what you had and pick the closest voices from the standard and premium lists:
Narrator: warm, unhurried. ELENA: young, quick, dry. GRANDPA JOE: slow and gravelly. Keep the direction in the text, too: ELENA: [whisper, like sharing a secret] Don't tell him I found it. GRANDPA JOE: [laugh] Found what?
Listen to one chapter, swap any voice that's off, regenerate any line that misreads a name, and export an M4B with chapter markers, one MP3 or a ZIP of chapter files.
Comparison with the main options
ElevenLabs is the closest match if cloning matters: its pricing page lists instant voice cloning from the Starter plan, and its Character Casting detects the characters in an EPUB or PDF. It exports MP3 or WAV, and its free plan has no commercial licence (ElevenLabs comparison).
Murf's transition guide, dated February 11, 2026, offered former PlayHT subscribers six free months matching their old plan, with proof of a subscription. Murf casts by hand, block by block, and offers custom clones as an Enterprise add-on (Murf comparison). Wondercraft imports EPUB or PDF and clones a voice from a sample (Wondercraft comparison). Open-source tools such as abogen run free on your own computer (open-source guide).
If you need your cloned voice back
A Play.ht clone can't be moved anywhere: it lived on Play.ht's servers, and what you can carry over is the original recording you made it from. FullCastBook doesn't offer voice cloning, so it can't recreate that clone. If your audiobook depended on your own voice, use a tool that clones from a sample, such as ElevenLabs or Wondercraft.
If the clone was a stand-in narrator rather than your own voice, try a chapter with a narrator plus a distinct voice for each character instead. For the full field, see the best TTS for audiobooks guide.
