In depth
NaturalReader vs FullCastBook
A NaturalReader alternative makes sense when the job changes from listening to producing. NaturalReader is a text-to-speech reader: it reads PDFs, documents and web pages aloud in its web app, its iOS and Android apps and a Chrome extension. FullCastBook turns a manuscript into a finished audiobook, with chapters, a narrator and a distinct voice for each character, and hands you the files.
This comparison uses NaturalReader's personal and commercial product pages and its help centre, checked on October 21, 2026. Whether you searched for a NaturalReader alternative or a natural reader alternative, the facts below are theirs; where their pages don't describe a feature, we say so rather than guess.
Reading aloud vs producing an audiobook
NaturalReader's personal plans are built for listening. Paid plans add OCR for scanned documents and photos of printed pages, and MP3 conversion of up to one million characters a month, up to 20 pages at a time. That's a good fit for studying, proofreading your own draft by ear, or getting through a reading list.
Producing an audiobook asks for different things: the whole book split into chapters, the same voices from the first page to the last, a way to fix one line without redoing a chapter, and files that a store or an audiobook app understands. That's the part FullCastBook is built around, and the usual reason to look for a NaturalReader alternative at all.
Commercial use and licences
This is the point most people miss. NaturalReader's web app page says audio generated with NaturalReader Online is permitted for personal use only, and its FAQ adds that files made with the personal versions can't be used publicly, commercially or redistributed, including on websites or YouTube. An audiobook made on a personal plan isn't one you can publish.
For that, NaturalReader sells NaturalReader Commercial, a separate voiceover product. Its help centre lists Starter at $29 per user a month or $198 a year with 500,000 credits a month, and Creator at $49 or $297 a year with 2,000,000, with MP3 or WAV export and SRT or VTT subtitles. With FullCastBook there's one set of plans, and the files you export are yours to sell under our terms.
Character voices and chapters
NaturalReader's personal app can add a second reader that alternates with the first by sentence or by paragraph, and its commercial editor lets you choose a different voice for each section of a script. Both are manual: you decide where each voice starts. Its pages don't describe detecting characters, chapter markers or M4B export.
FullCastBook reads the dialogue and works out who's speaking. Take three lines from a fantasy chapter: Narrator: "The gate was already open." Captain Rhee [low, wary]: "Nobody leaves it open." Pell [laugh]: "Somebody just did." The narrator, the captain and Pell each get their own voice, and the bracketed notes shape the delivery. Fix a misattributed line by changing its speaker, or regenerate one line without touching the rest. The multi-voice text to speech page shows how the casting works.
Chapters come from the book's contents page or headings and become markers in the M4B, or separate MP3s in a ZIP.
Cost for a whole book
NaturalReader's help centre lists its personal plans at $13.90 a month or $79 a year for Lite, $20.90 or $119 for Plus, and $25.90 or $159 for Pro, but audio from those plans stays personal. For a book you'll sell, the commercial plans are the fair comparison with any NaturalReader alternative.
By our arithmetic, an 80,000-word novel is roughly 470,000 characters. Check how NaturalReader counts commercial credits before you plan a whole book on a monthly allowance. FullCastBook charges credits by the characters voiced, so a full cast costs the same as one voice at the same voice tier. The audiobook cost calculator turns your word count into credits and the plan that covers it, and plans are on the pricing page.
Which one should you choose?
Choose NaturalReader if you want to listen: documents, web pages and scanned pages on your phone, computer and browser, with OCR and voice cloning on paid plans. Choose FullCastBook as your NaturalReader alternative if you want to produce a book: chapters, a voice per character, M4B or chapter MP3s, and the right to sell what you export without buying a second product. If you were after a NaturalReader alternative free of charge, start with the free credits on a short sample chapter.
