Lewis Carroll
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Alice asks the grinning Cheshire Cat for directions — and gets none.
The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought; still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt it ought to be treated with respect.

In depth
People search for Kindle to audiobook with two very different goals. Readers want to listen to a Kindle book they bought. Authors want an audio edition of a book they published on Kindle. The honest answer is different for each, so this page takes them one at a time.
The short version: FullCastBook can't open Kindle store purchases, because they're locked with DRM and we don't remove it. If you wrote the book, though, the manuscript you uploaded to KDP makes an excellent full-cast audiobook. Questions about selling and publishing AI audiobooks are also answered on our home page.
Not one you bought. Kindle books are delivered in Amazon's own formats, such as AZW3 and KFX, usually with DRM that ties them to your Amazon account. FullCastBook only opens DRM-free EPUB, PDF, DOCX and TXT files, and removing DRM isn't something we do or help with. Buying a Kindle book also gives you a license to read it, not the right to make an audio edition.
For readers, Kindle to audiobook listening happens inside Amazon's own apps. The Kindle apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, and newer Kindle e-readers, include Assistive Reader, which reads the book aloud with your device's text-to-speech voice. Many titles also sell an Audible edition. Both keep you inside the rights the publisher granted.
If you wrote the book, you already have what you need. To turn a Kindle book into an audiobook, start from the file you uploaded to KDP, not the Kindle download. KDP takes DOC/DOCX, EPUB and KPF for ebook manuscripts; FullCastBook reads DOCX and EPUB directly. A KPF made in Kindle Create can't be read, so use the Word file you built it from, and save an old .doc as .docx first.
A KDP manuscript to audiobook conversion keeps your structure. In a DOCX, chapters come from the Heading 1 styles; in an EPUB, from the table of contents. Front matter like the copyright page and the "also by" list is suggested to leave out, so the audiobook opens on chapter one.
Either works. Pick the EPUB if it's the final, proofread version, since its table of contents gives every chapter its exact title. Pick the DOCX if you're still editing, because you can fix the text in Word and upload again. Both are far cleaner than a print PDF, which brings page numbers and running headers with it.
The format details are in EPUB to audiobook and Word document to audiobook.
Kindle fiction, from romance to LitRPG, tends to be dialogue-heavy, and that is where a full cast earns its place in a Kindle to audiobook project. FullCastBook attributes each line of dialogue to the character who speaks it and gives every character a distinct voice next to the narrator, so a scene with four people talking stays easy to follow.
Direct the read with notes in brackets, like [whisper, like sharing a secret], and sound tags such as [laugh] or [sigh]. Keep the same cast for the whole series, which matters when readers start book two the day they finish book one. Standard voices run on Google Gemini TTS and premium voices on ElevenLabs.
No, but it's worth knowing before you plan a Kindle to audiobook release. As of October 2026, Virtual Voice is an invite-only KDP beta that turns eligible ebooks into audiobooks for the US marketplace, free to the author, with a 40% royalty on Amazon and Audible. It reads with one voice per book, which you can change per chapter, and the beta terms say Amazon keeps ownership of the audio file.
If your ebook is in KDP Select, KDP says audiobooks with virtual voice must be exclusive to Audible during enrollment, and that this applies to any audio edition of that book, so pick one audio route per title. The KDP Virtual Voice alternative page compares the two in more depth.
Audible and ACX don't currently accept AI narration unless authorized; ACX's rules of April 2026 say it is working on accepting third-party TTS but give no date. Other stores set their own policies. Spotify for Authors, for example, accepts digital voice narration from providers such as Google Play Books and ElevenLabs when you declare it on upload. Check each store's current rules before you publish.
Wherever you publish your Kindle to audiobook edition, the files from FullCastBook are yours, with no DRM added: an M4B with chapter markers, one MP3, or a ZIP with a file per chapter. For the whole workflow, see the AI audiobook generator.
No. Kindle purchases are locked with DRM, and FullCastBook doesn't open Kindle formats or remove DRM. To listen, use Assistive Reader in the Kindle app, or buy the Audible edition if there is one.
They're Amazon's Kindle formats and are usually DRM-protected. FullCastBook opens DRM-free EPUB, PDF, DOCX and TXT files only.
Upload the DOCX or EPUB you sent to KDP, check the chapters and the cast, then generate and export. If you built the book in Kindle Create, use the Word file you started from.
No. As of October 2026, Virtual Voice is Amazon's invite-only beta for the US marketplace, with one voice per book. FullCastBook works from your manuscript, casts every character and gives you the files.
Not through ACX at the moment: Audible and ACX don't currently accept AI narration unless authorized, and Amazon's own AI route is Virtual Voice. Check other stores' policies before you publish.
Only with the rights holder's permission, or for public-domain texts in a DRM-free edition. Owning a Kindle copy doesn't include audio rights.
Kindle to audiobook, the author's way: upload the DOCX or EPUB you sent to KDP, cast every character and keep the files. Free to start.
