Most M4B tools merge MP3s you already have. This M4B audiobook maker starts from text: upload EPUB, PDF, DOCX or TXT, voice it with a full cast, and download one M4B with a marker at every chapter.

Lewis Carroll
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Alice asks the grinning Cheshire Cat for directions — and gets none.
The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought; still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt it ought to be treated with respect.

In depth
An M4B is an audiobook packed into one file. It uses the same MPEG-4 audio container as an .m4a file, with an extension that tells players to treat it as a book: show the chapter list and, in most audiobook apps, keep your place. One file per book is also easier to manage than forty MP3s.
Most M4B creator tools assume the audio already exists. As an M4B audiobook maker, FullCastBook starts one step earlier, from your text: it voices the book with a full cast and hands you the finished .m4b with a chapter marker at every chapter. See how it works on the home page.
To create M4B with chapters, the chapters have to come from somewhere, and here they come from your manuscript. An EPUB brings its table of contents. A DOCX uses its Heading 1 styles. A TXT file or pasted text is split at lines like "Chapter 1", "Part Two" or "Prologue", and a PDF with a text layer is split the same way after its page numbers are dropped.
Front matter such as the cover, copyright and contents pages is suggested to leave out, so the first marker lands on the first chapter. Check the list before you generate: rename a chapter, remove one you don't want, or fix a heading in the source and import again. A book with no recognizable headings arrives as one chapter or as parts of roughly equal length, which is the moment to add them.
A chapter marker is a timestamp stored inside the file. In an M4B with chapters, each marker points at the start of a chapter, so the player can list the chapters, skip forward or back by one, and show how far you are through the current one. Because the markers live in the file, they travel with it to every device and app.
The FullCastBook M4B audiobook maker places one marker at the start of every chapter you export. If you need a separate track per chapter instead, for a store or a player that wants individual files, export the ZIP with one file per chapter as well.
Each marker carries the chapter title you set in the studio, and the chapters are written in both forms players look for: the chapter track Apple's players read, and the chapter list that VLC, Audiobookshelf and most Android players read. The file is also tagged with the book's title and author and marked as an audiobook, so apps file it with your books, not your music.
Search for an M4B maker or M4B creator and most results are packaging tools: m4b-tool on the command line, Audiobook Builder on the Mac, and similar apps. They take audio files you already have, join them, and add chapter markers from the file names or by hand. If your audiobook is already recorded, they're the right choice.
FullCastBook is for when the book exists only as text. It writes the narration, gives each character a voice, and packages the result as one M4B, so there are no MP3s to rename and merge. It doesn't merge audio files you bring; for that job, use one of the tools above.
Audiobook players such as BookPlayer on iPhone and Smart AudioBook Player on Android open M4B files and show the chapter list; some general music apps play the audio but ignore the chapters, and VLC opens M4B on a computer. Audiobookshelf, the self-hosted server, shows the chapters on every device. No DRM is added, so the file is yours to copy wherever you listen. Device-by-device steps are in how to play M4B files.
Choose M4B for a book you'll hear in an audiobook app, and MP3 when a car stereo, a podcast app or a store asks for it; the ZIP with one file per chapter keeps the chapter breaks, and one project can export both. The full comparison is in M4B vs MP3. Estimate the running time with the audiobook length calculator, or see the AI audiobook generator for the rest of the studio.

Yes, in an audiobook player app such as Smart AudioBook Player. Some general music apps play M4B but ignore the chapters; if a device won't open it at all, export MP3 instead.
Yes, with our free MP3 to M4B converter: drop in your MP3s, put them in order, name the chapters and download one M4B with chapter markers. It runs in your browser, so the files are not uploaded. The studio itself makes M4Bs from text it voices.
A project can hold up to 500 chapters, which covers even very long books. Each chapter you export gets its own marker.
The file is yours. Each store sets its own file format and AI-narration rules, and some ask for MP3 instead; Audible and ACX don't currently accept AI narration unless authorized.
Upload the book, voice it with a full cast, and let the M4B audiobook maker hand you one file with a marker at every chapter. Free to start.
