Dual and duet narration
Give each lead a voice of their own, the way romance audiobooks are often recorded: dual narration for alternating POV chapters, duet narration for every line of dialogue. You cast the couple and direct the chemistry.

Lewis Carroll
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Alice asks the grinning Cheshire Cat for directions — and gets none.
The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought; still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt it ought to be treated with respect.

In depth
Romance audiobook narration has its own conventions, and the biggest one is two voices. Many romances alternate between the heroine's and the hero's point of view, so listeners expect to hear her when they are in her head and him when the story shifts. ACX, Audible's production platform, describes two ways to do it: dual narration, where two narrators trade off by chapter or point of view, and duet narration, where both perform the main characters' voices throughout, often alternating in dialogue.
With human narrators, two voices mean two bookings and often two studios. In FullCastBook, an AI audiobook generator built around casts, the second voice is a casting choice: it finds every speaker in your manuscript, gives each one a voice, and lets you decide which lead tells which chapter.
In a dual narration audiobook, each POV chapter belongs to one narrator, who reads the narration and performs everyone's dialogue in that chapter, including the other lead. It suits books whose chapters read like separate confessions: first person, a strong inner voice, the two leads apart for long stretches.
To build it in FullCastBook, give the narration of each chapter to its POV lead, or add a second narrator to the cast for the hero's chapters. For strict dual narration, also move the other lead's dialogue in each chapter to that chapter's voice. Putting the POV name in each chapter heading, such as “Chapter 3: Rhys”, makes it quick to see which chapter belongs to whom.
Duet narration keeps each lead's voice on that lead's lines for the whole book, so when they argue, flirt or finally confess, you hear two people in the scene. That is how FullCastBook casts by default: every character speaks in their own voice. To turn it into full duet narration, give the narration of each POV chapter to that chapter's lead, so her chapters are told in her voice and his in his.
With AI voices, duet narration is usually the easier one to get right, because each voice only ever plays one person. Dual narration asks the POV voice to perform the other lead too, and a direction note can change a voice's tone but not turn it into someone else. If you can't decide, generate one dialogue-heavy chapter both ways and listen.
A short scene of our own, from the heroine's chapter. Her line, in a soft, warm voice: [teasing, trying not to smile] “You're early. You're never early.” His line, in a low, close voice: [low, a little unsteady] “I didn't want to miss you.” Then her narration, in her voice because it's her chapter: [softly, to herself] I told myself it didn't mean anything. [breathe] My heart didn't listen.
Three lines, two voices, three short directions. Nothing is marked as romantic; the notes describe what each character is hiding, and the performance does the rest.
Romance audiobook voices live or die on warmth. Choose leads you would happily listen to for ten hours, then check them as a pair: play the same exchange in both voices and make sure they contrast without clashing. A low, intimate voice suits a hero narrator and a soft, unhurried one a heroine; refined British voices suit a Regency, bright, quick voices the energy of a rom-com, and a warm, homely voice a small-town romance.
Accent comes from the voice you choose, not from a note in brackets, so audition for it; the studio's premium voices include British and Australian accents as well as American ones. Give side characters voices that stay out of the leads' range, a bright, chatty voice for the best friend or a gruff one for an older brother, so the couple always stands out.
Tender and steamy scenes need room. Slow the delivery with notes like [softly, close to the ear] or [slow, savoring it], put a [breathe] where a real reader would pause, and use [sigh] sparingly: once lands, three times sounds like parody. Leave the narration around those lines calm; contrast does more than turning every sentence up.
The AI voice models behind FullCastBook come from third-party providers with their own content rules, so a very explicit line can occasionally be refused. Try your steamiest scene on the free credits before you commit to the book, and check each store's rules for adult content before you publish.
Romance readers follow couples and friend groups across a series, and a lead who changes voice in book two breaks the spell. FullCastBook keeps the cast with the project, so a sequel or spin-off starts with every returning character already cast. When the best friend gets her own book, she keeps her voice and simply becomes a lead.
Still deciding whether you need a cast at all? Compare full cast vs single narrator. Before you publish, label the audiobook as digitally narrated where stores ask; Spotify, for one, requires it, and ACX currently requires human narration unless otherwise authorized.
Two narrators trade off by chapter or point of view: in the heroine's chapters you hear her voice, and when the story shifts to the hero, the narration does too. Each narrator also performs the other characters' lines in their own chapters.
In dual narration, each narrator reads whole chapters, including the other lead's dialogue. In duet narration, each lead's voice speaks that lead's lines throughout the book, so both voices are heard in the same scene.
Yes, by choosing the voices, because accent comes from the voice itself. The studio's premium voices include British and Australian accents as well as American ones, so try a few before you build a character around a specific accent.
Yes. Give the narration of each POV chapter to that lead's voice, or add a second narrator to the cast and move the hero's chapters to it. Dialogue stays with each character unless you move it.
Some do, and some seek out favorite human narrators by name, so be upfront. Label the audiobook as digital narration where stores ask and offer a sample. ACX currently doesn't accept AI narration unless authorized.
Warm, unhurried voices with clear contrast between the two leads. Test them as a pair on a dialogue-heavy chapter, not just on a single line.
Romance between adults is fine under our terms, but the voice models come from third-party providers with their own content rules, so a very explicit line can occasionally be refused. Try your most explicit scene on the free credits first.
