Step-by-step guide

How to choose your route on Amazon

Four decisions, in the order they come up.

  1. Check Virtual Voice first

Open your KDP Bookshelf. If "Add Audible audiobook with virtual voice" shows next to an eBook, you're invited and that book is eligible.
  2. Choose who narrates

No invite? On ACX you narrate it yourself or hire a narrator for a per-finished-hour fee, a royalty share or a mix.
  3. Decide on exclusivity

Exclusive ACX distribution pays 50% under the new royalty model, non-exclusive 30%; KDP Select ties any audio edition to Audible.
  4. Plan any AI version separately

An AI full cast can't go through ACX today. Publish it on Spotify, Kobo or your own site, and keep the eBook on Amazon.

Before you start

What Amazon expects before you start

Six requirements from ACX and KDP, as of October 2026.

  • A live Kindle eBook

ACX starts from a book on the Kindle Store; Virtual Voice needs a Live, reflowable eBook with an NCX table of contents.
  • The right country

ACX is open to residents of the US, UK, Canada and Ireland; Virtual Voice audiobooks sell in the US marketplace only.
  • The audio rights

You need the audio rights to your book. Public-domain titles aren't eligible for Virtual Voice.
  • A supported language

Virtual Voice takes eBooks in English, Spanish, Italian and French. ACX needs a human narrator in any language.
  • An exclusivity decision

KDP Select makes every audio edition exclusive to Audible during enrollment, and ACX royalty shares require exclusivity too.
  • Time for review

ACX's quality team reviews submitted audio within 10 business days and returns files that miss the requirements.

Decision guide

How to make an audiobook on Amazon: three routes

How to make an audiobook on Amazon depends on who narrates it. Amazon sells audiobooks through Audible, Amazon.com and its apps, and independent authors get there two ways: ACX, Audible's marketplace for human-narrated audiobooks, or KDP's Virtual Voice beta, which reads your Kindle eBook with Amazon's synthetic voices. The third route is an AI-narrated audiobook you make yourself and sell outside Audible, because ACX doesn't accept it.

Each route is covered below with its rules as of October 2026, then compared on cost and time.

Route 1: ACX with a human narrator

ACX is open to residents of the US, UK, Canada and Ireland and starts from a book already on the Kindle Store. Set up your profile and payment details, claim your title, write the description, then narrate it yourself or find a narrator through auditions.

With a narrator you choose how to pay: a per-finished-hour fee, a royalty share with nothing upfront, or Royalty Share Plus, a mix of both. The narrator first delivers a 15-minute checkpoint so you can agree on accents, pronunciations and pacing, and you can then request up to two full rounds of changes. After approval and payment, ACX's quality team reviews the audio within 10 business days, and the audiobook goes on sale on Audible, Amazon and Apple Books.

Royalties changed this year. Under the model ACX opened to all creators on May 26, 2026, exclusive distribution pays 50% and non-exclusive 30%, up from 40% and 25%, and ACX says the legacy model ends by the end of 2026. Royalty shares require exclusivity and split the 50% evenly with the narrator.

Route 2: KDP Virtual Voice

If you're asking how to publish an audiobook on KDP without a narrator, this is the route, but only by invitation. As of October 2026, KDP calls audiobooks with virtual voice an invite-only beta that it plans to expand over time. If your eBook is eligible, "Add Audible audiobook with virtual voice" appears on your KDP Bookshelf; to hear about invitations, subscribe to KDP's news and announcement emails.

Eligibility is strict: the eBook must be Live (not on pre-order), reflowable, with an NCX table of contents, in English, Spanish, Italian or French, not public domain, and without an existing Audible audiobook. In the Virtual Voice Studio you pick from 80+ voices, one per chapter, and adjust pauses, pace and pronunciation. Creation is free, list prices run from $3.99 to $14.99, royalties are 40% during the beta, and sales are limited to the US marketplace.

Two catches. The beta terms say Amazon retains ownership of the audio file, so you can't download it and sell it elsewhere. And if the eBook is in KDP Select, any audio edition of that book must be exclusive to Audible for the enrollment period.

AI audiobooks and Amazon's rules

ACX's audio submission requirements, updated April 15, 2026, say audiobooks must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized and prohibit unauthorized text-to-speech or AI. That rules out uploading an AI full cast from FullCastBook, ElevenLabs or any other tool, even though ACX says Audible is working to accept third-party TTS. The full policy picture is in does Audible accept AI-narrated audiobooks.

So the AI route goes around Audible: keep the Kindle eBook on Amazon and publish the audiobook on Spotify for Authors, Kobo Writing Life or your own site. If you'd have used Virtual Voice mainly to save money, weigh it against a full cast in the KDP Virtual Voice alternative guide, and check KDP Select's audio exclusivity before adding a Virtual Voice edition.

Costs and timelines compared

A typical 80,000-word novel runs about 8.6 finished hours at roughly 9,300 words per hour. A narrator charging $100 to $1,000+ per finished hour (Authors Republic, revised October 2025) puts that at about $860 to $8,600 by our arithmetic, while a royalty share costs nothing upfront but halves your royalty. Narrating it yourself takes new narrators five to seven hours of work per finished hour, says ACX.

Virtual Voice costs nothing and skips recording, if you're invited. The AI-elsewhere route costs credits for the text voiced; the audiobook cost guide and the calculator give the numbers. Spotify says uploads reach listeners within three business days, and Kobo says 24 to 72 hours.

How to publish an audiobook on Amazon for free

There are three ways to pay nothing upfront, as of October 2026: Virtual Voice if you're invited; a royalty share on ACX, where you give up half your royalty and must stay exclusive; or narrating it yourself on ACX, which costs time, a quiet room and a decent microphone. Answers to other common publishing questions are in the FAQ.
