Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Alice asks the grinning Cheshire Cat for directions — and gets none.

The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought; still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt it ought to be treated with respect.

Cheshire Puss, would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?

Cheshire CatSnikSly

That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.

I don't much care where—

Cheshire CatSnikSly

Then it doesn't matter which way you go.

—so long as I get somewhere.

Cheshire CatSnikSly

Oh, you're sure to do that, if you only walk long enough.

Step-by-step guide

How to turn a book into an audiobook

Free to start: no card, nothing to install.

  1. Pick a book you can use

Your own book, a public-domain title or one you have audio rights to, as a DRM-free EPUB, PDF, DOCX or TXT file.
  2. Upload it

Chapters come from the table of contents or the headings, and front matter like the copyright page is set aside.
  3. Cast the characters

Every speaking character is detected and gets a voice next to the narrator. Swap any voice or fix any line's speaker.
  4. Generate and export

Do one chapter or the whole book, listen in the browser, then export an M4B with chapter markers, one MP3 or a ZIP per chapter.

Book to Audiobook

Features & capabilities

What you get, from manuscript to finished audiobook.

  • Whatever file you have

EPUB, PDF with a text layer, DOCX, TXT or pasted text: bring the version of the book you have, DRM-free.
  • Chapters found for you

The table of contents, styled headings or lines like "Chapter 4" set the chapters; leave out the copyright page and acknowledgements.
  • A voice for every character

The book to audiobook converter attributes dialogue to each speaker, so a novel sounds like a cast instead of one reader.
  • Standard and premium voices

Standard voices run on Google Gemini TTS and premium voices on ElevenLabs, in many languages; English works best today.
  • One cast for a series

Keep the voices for returning characters, so book three sounds like book one.
  • Export by chapter

An M4B with chapter markers, one MP3 for the whole book, or a ZIP with one file per chapter.

Use cases

Books that suit a full cast

Where authors and storytellers put it to work.

  • Indie novels

Novel to audiobook for your own published book: an audio edition you own, ready for stores that accept AI narration.
  • Fantasy and big casts

A large ensemble stays easy to follow when every character keeps their own voice from chapter one.
  • Public-domain classics

Give a classic a full cast. The Alice in Wonderland scene in the demo above was made this way.
  • Nonfiction and memoir

One steady narrator for the prose, with other voices only where people are quoted.

In depth

Everything you need to know about book to audiobook conversion

Turning a book into an audiobook used to mean a narrator, a booth and weeks of editing. A book to audiobook converter changes the order of the work: the text already exists, so the job becomes choosing voices, checking who says what and listening back.

FullCastBook reads the book you upload, splits it into chapters, attributes each line of dialogue to a character and casts a distinct voice for the narrator and every speaking part. You can hear a full-cast scene on the home page before you upload anything.

How to turn a book into an audiobook without a studio

Start with the cleanest file you have. If you wrote the book, the manuscript or the ebook you exported beats a print PDF, because it carries chapter headings and no page numbers or running headers. Upload it, check that the chapter list matches the book, and leave out front matter like the copyright page or the acknowledgements.

Next, review the cast. FullCastBook lists every character it found with a suggested voice. Play a few lines for each, swap any voice that doesn't fit, and skim the dialogue-heavy chapters for lines given to the wrong speaker. Then generate one chapter, listen from start to finish, and only then queue the rest. Fixes are cheap at this stage: regenerate a single line, not the whole chapter.

Novel to audiobook: a narrator plus a voice per character

A novel is mostly narration with dialogue running through it, so novel to audiobook conversion works best as a cast: one steady narrator for the prose and a distinct voice for each character inside the quotation marks. In a long scene with four people talking, the listener never has to guess who has the line.

Direction lives in the text. Put a note in brackets before a line, like [whisper, like sharing a secret], or add a sound tag such as [laugh] or [breathe], and the delivery follows. Save it for the turning points of a scene rather than every sentence; most lines read well on their own.

Book to audiobook converter: EPUB, PDF, DOCX and TXT

Each format brings its own structure. An EPUB has a table of contents, so each chapter keeps its title. A DOCX uses its Heading 1 styles. A TXT file or pasted text is split at lines like "Chapter 1", "Part Two" or "Prologue". A PDF needs a text layer, since there's no OCR, and its running headers may need deleting; the PDF to audiobook guide covers the details.

If you're the author, the file you sent to your editor or uploaded to a store is usually the best source. Still revising? The manuscript to audiobook guide covers working from a draft that keeps changing.

Which books you can convert: your own, public domain, DRM-free

You can convert a book to audiobook when you hold the rights to it or it's in the public domain where you live and publish. That covers your own novels and nonfiction, works whose copyright has expired, and books whose rights holder has given you permission for an audio edition.

Buying an ebook doesn't give you audio rights, and store downloads are usually locked with DRM, which FullCastBook doesn't remove. A DRM-free file is the technical requirement; the rights are yours to check. If you just want to listen to a book you bought, the store's own read-aloud feature or its audiobook edition is the route.

Convert book to audiobook in one pass or chapter by chapter

You don't have to do the whole book at once. Many authors convert book to audiobook chapter by chapter: the opening chapters first to settle the cast, then the rest once the voices feel right. Changing a voice later means regenerating the chapters that use it, so it pays to lock the cast early.

When it all sounds right, export an M4B with chapter markers for audiobook players, one MP3, or a ZIP with a file per chapter. The files have no DRM added and they're yours to publish where AI narration is accepted. Audible and ACX don't currently accept it unless authorized, so check each store first.

What it costs next to a human-narrated production

A human-narrated audiobook is usually priced per finished hour, and a full cast means booking several narrators. FullCastBook charges credits by the characters voiced, so the cost follows the length of the book, and the free credits you get on sign-up cover a short sample chapter.

To see the running time and credits for your word count, use the audiobook cost calculator. For everything the studio does, from casting to export, see the AI audiobook generator.

FAQ

Book to Audiobook: FAQ

Something not covered here? Email us at support@fullcastbook.com

Can I turn any book into an audiobook?

Technically, any DRM-free EPUB, PDF with a text layer, DOCX or TXT file will import. Legally, you need the rights to the text: your own book, a public-domain title, or permission from the rights holder.

Is it legal to convert a book I bought into an audiobook?

Buying an ebook gives you a license to read it, not audio rights, and store downloads usually carry DRM that FullCastBook doesn't remove. Use books you hold the rights to or that are in the public domain.

How long does it take to turn a book into an audiobook?

Import and chapter detection take moments, and the audio is generated chapter by chapter. Most of your time goes into checking the cast and listening back, so start with one chapter.

Can AI read a novel with different voices for each character?

Yes. Every speaking character is detected and given a distinct voice next to the narrator, and you can swap any voice or move any line to another speaker.

How much does it cost to convert a book to audiobook?

Credits are counted by the characters voiced, so it depends on the length of the book. The free sign-up credits cover a short sample chapter; the cost calculator estimates a whole book against the current plans.

Can I publish my audiobook on Audible?

Not at the moment: Audible and ACX don't currently accept AI-narrated audiobooks unless authorized. The files are yours, so check each store's policy on AI narration before you upload.
