Lewis Carroll
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Alice asks the grinning Cheshire Cat for directions — and gets none.
The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought; still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt it ought to be treated with respect.

In depth
PDF to MP3 is the quick job: a document you'd rather hear than read, turned into a file your phone, car or MP3 player can play. Lecture notes before an exam, a long report for the commute, a paper you wrote and want to proof by ear. No chapters to perfect and no cast to direct, just clear audio.
FullCastBook handles it with the same studio it uses for whole books. Upload a text-based PDF, pick a narrator voice, listen and download MP3. See how it works on the home page, or read on for what happens to your document and which file to choose.
First, upload a PDF with a text layer: if you can select a sentence in your PDF reader, it will work. Second, choose a narrator voice and play a few lines; a document without dialogue is read by that one voice from start to finish. Third, generate and download one MP3, or a ZIP with a file per chapter.
Before you convert PDF to audio, spend a minute in the studio. Bare page numbers are removed for you and wrapped lines are rejoined, but running headers, figure captions and table fragments come through as text. Delete the lines you don't want spoken and regenerate any that read oddly.
The main setting in this PDF to MP3 converter is the voice. Standard voices run on Google Gemini TTS and premium voices on ElevenLabs; try a few on a page of your PDF and pick the one you could listen to for an hour. If the PDF does include dialogue, such as a case study with quotes or a short story, each speaker can get their own voice, and notes in brackets like [slowly, clearly] shape the delivery.
The second setting is the file layout. Headings like "Chapter 2", "Part III" or "Section 4" split the document, and each part can become its own MP3. Without them, a short PDF stays one file and a long one is cut at paragraph breaks into parts of about 20,000 characters.
One MP3 is simplest for a short document: a single file, one tap to play. For anything longer, a ZIP with one file per chapter is easier to live with. You can skip straight to section five, and each file shows up as its own track in a music or podcast app.
MP3 has no chapter list that most players show, which is why separate files are the MP3 answer to chapters. If you want one file with chapters inside it, that's what M4B is for, as the table above shows; M4B vs MP3 covers the difference in full.
A PDF to audio converter works best on documents that are mostly prose. Notes, essays, reports and papers turn into clean listening. Slides and forms don't: their text is short fragments, and the result sounds like someone reading bullet points out of order.
Tables are read cell by cell, footnotes where they sit on the page, and equations as strings of symbols. Two-column layouts can also come out in the wrong order. For study, it's often quickest to delete those lines and keep the explanation around them. Scanned handouts need OCR first, since FullCastBook doesn't run it.
PDF to MP3 AI voices sound like a person reading: sentences rise and fall, questions sound like questions, and long passages stay easy to follow. The system voices behind many free read-aloud tools are clear but flat, and few of them save a file you can keep.
The trade-off is cost. Built-in read-aloud is free, while generating with FullCastBook uses credits counted by the characters voiced; the free credits on sign-up cover a sample. See pricing for plans, text to audiobook if you'd rather paste the text, or TXT to MP3 if you have a plain text file.
If the PDF is a book, especially fiction, an MP3 per chapter works but isn't the best fit. A PDF to audiobook project gives every character a voice and exports an M4B with chapter markers, so audiobook players show the chapter list. Same upload, different finish. For everything else the studio does, see the AI audiobook generator.
Sign up free, with no card, and the credits you get cover a sample so you can hear the voice. Longer documents need a paid plan; see pricing. Free read-aloud in a PDF reader doesn't save an MP3.
Not directly. A scan has no text layer, and FullCastBook doesn't run OCR. Make the PDF searchable with an OCR tool first, then upload it.
MP3 is one of the most widely supported audio formats, so it plays on phones, computers, car stereos and MP3 players. If a device struggles with one long file, download the ZIP with one file per chapter.
There's no page limit as such. Files can be up to 60 MB, one chapter can hold up to 200,000 characters and a project up to 3 million, which covers most documents.
Yes. Once you download the MP3 or the ZIP, the files are on your device and play without a connection in any music, podcast or audiobook app.
Same upload, different goal. PDF to MP3 is for documents you want as plain audio files; PDF to audiobook is for books, with a voice per character and an M4B with chapter markers.
