The breakdown
How much does it cost to make an audiobook? The short answer
How much does it cost to make an audiobook? With a human narrator, the main cost is narration, quoted as an audiobook cost per finished hour (PFH): each hour of final, edited audio. Published rates run from about $100 PFH for a beginner to $1,000 or more for top narrators (Authors Republic, revised October 2025), and ElevenLabs' audiobooks page puts traditional production at $500 to $1,000 per finished hour.
A typical 80,000-word novel is about 8.6 finished hours, so narration alone lands somewhere between roughly $860 and $8,600. A royalty share takes the upfront cost to zero in exchange for half your royalty. AI narration is priced by the text voiced, not the hour; the audiobook cost calculator shows our live numbers for your word count. Every outside figure here is as of October 2026.
Audiobook narrator cost: per finished hour, royalty share or hybrid
Per finished hour means you pay for the length of the final audiobook, not studio time. That's why rates look high: ACX says one finished hour typically takes a new narrator five to seven hours of work, covering recording, editing and mastering. An older ACX blog post put narration at roughly $200 PFH plus about the same again for post-production, and called $300 to $400 PFH a sensible all-in rate.
On ACX you can also pay nothing upfront through a royalty share, where the narrator splits your royalty instead. Under the royalty model ACX opened to all creators on May 26, 2026, exclusive distribution pays 50%, and a royalty share divides that into 25% for you and 25% for the narrator; the deal requires exclusive distribution. Royalty Share Plus mixes the two, a reduced PFH fee plus the split, and ACX requires at least $100 PFH on those deals for SAG-AFTRA narrators to receive union contributions.
One narrator voicing every character means one rate. A duet or full cast with human actors means booking, directing and paying each performer, which is why multi-narrator productions are rare outside big releases. The trade-offs between the two kinds of narration are in AI vs human audiobook narrator.
Audiobook production cost beyond narration
Ask what a PFH quote includes. Authors Republic's guide counts editing, proofing, mastering, pickups and any studio fees inside the rate, but some narrators bill them separately. Either way, the audio has to meet store specs: ACX wants 192 kbps constant-bitrate MP3 files with levels between -23 and -18 dB RMS and peaks below -3 dB.
Then the extras: a square audiobook cover (Spotify recommends 3,000 by 3,000 pixels), an audiobook ISBN if your distributor needs one (Spotify doesn't assign them; INaudio and Kobo assign their own), a license for any music in the credits, and your time to proof-listen every chapter. None is large next to narration, but across a series they add up.
AI audiobook cost per book
AI narration changes the unit. You pay for characters voiced instead of hours, so a longer book costs more, a premium voice costs more per line, and anything you leave out of the audio costs nothing. Regenerating a line after an edit uses credits again.
As a reference point, ElevenLabs says an average book typically needs more than 100,000 credits, and its Creator plan is $22 a month for 121,000 credits; by our arithmetic an 80,000-word novel is about 470,000 characters. Some programs are free with strings attached: KDP Virtual Voice (invite-only, US only), Google Play Books' auto-narration (no fee during the beta, eBook must be on Google Play) and Spotify's Audiobook Creation Tools (five projects, US authors, English).
FullCastBook charges credits per character voiced, with standard and premium voices, and gives free credits on sign-up for a short sample chapter. We don't print prices here because they change: the calculator and the AI audiobook pricing section read the live plans.
Worked example: an 80,000-word novel
At about 9,300 words per finished hour, 80,000 words is roughly 8.6 hours. By our arithmetic, narration then costs about $860 at $100 PFH, $1,720 at $200 PFH, $2,580 to $3,440 at ACX's $300 to $400 benchmark, and $8,600 at $1,000 PFH.
A royalty share costs nothing upfront, but the narrator takes 25 of your 50 royalty points on every exclusive sale for the term of the deal. Narrating it yourself has no fee, but at five to seven hours per finished hour it is roughly 43 to 60 hours of your time. For the AI version, enter 80,000 words in the audiobook cost calculator to see the running time, the credits and the plan that covers it.
How to lower the cost to produce an audiobook
Cut what doesn't need to be heard, such as indexes, references and long appendices. Fix the text before anyone records or generates anything, because pickups and regenerations are where budgets drift. Produce one sample chapter, agree on the voices and pronunciations, then do the rest.
Match the route to the store. Audible through ACX takes human narration only, so if Audible matters most, a royalty share or a PFH narrator is the way in. If you plan to sell on Spotify, Kobo or your own site, an AI full cast avoids per-hour fees entirely; check the calculator against a narrator's quote. The step-by-step guide covers the AI production itself.
