ElevenLabs vs FullCastBook for audiobooks
If you're weighing an ElevenLabs audiobook alternative, start with what changed: since July 30, 2026, ElevenLabs' ElevenCreative Audiobooks tool can detect the characters in a book and give each one a voice, the same full-cast idea FullCastBook is built around. So the question is no longer whether either tool can do a full cast, but how they differ on everything around it: which files go in, what comes out, what the free plan allows and what a complete book costs.
This page compares the two using ElevenLabs' public pricing page, audiobooks page, documentation and help center, checked on October 20, 2026. Where something isn't published, we say so instead of guessing.
What ElevenLabs does well
ElevenLabs is the bigger platform. Its audiobooks page lists narration in 90+ languages, its library has more than 10,000 voices, and voice cloning is built in. Character Casting suggests voices by age, gender, tone and role in the story, lets you preview them on the book's own dialogue, and handles up to 150 detected voices per book. Its documentation also describes a pronunciation dictionary pre-filled with the names and places in your book, plus sound effects and music in its Professional Studio.
Distribution is the other strength. Finished books can go to ElevenReader, whose publishing program pays authors 60% of direct sales with no exclusivity, to Spotify for Authors as MP3, and to other stores through INaudio. If you want production and distribution in one account, that matters.
Where FullCastBook is different
As an ElevenLabs Studio audiobook alternative, FullCastBook only makes audiobooks, and the differences follow from that. It accepts DOCX and TXT manuscripts as well as EPUB and PDF, so you can upload the file you actually edit in, or paste the text. ElevenLabs' audiobook documentation lists EPUB and PDF as inputs.
On export, FullCastBook produces an M4B with a marker for every chapter, alongside one MP3 for the whole book or a ZIP with a file per chapter. ElevenLabs' documentation lists MP3 and WAV, as one file or per chapter, plus an AAF timeline and subtitles; M4B isn't among them.
Direction lives in the text. A note in brackets such as [whisper, like sharing a secret] or a sound tag such as [laugh] sits next to the line it changes, and the cast you pick for one book carries over to the next one in a series.
ElevenLabs audiobook cost for a whole book
ElevenLabs sells monthly credit plans: Free with 10,000 credits, Starter at $6 for 30,000, Creator at $22 for 121,000 and Pro at $99 for 600,000, with larger Scale and Business plans above that; paying yearly gives two months free. Text-to-speech on its Multilingual v2 model uses one credit per character.
Its own guide says an average book typically needs more than 100,000 credits and calls Creator the most practical starting point. By our arithmetic, an 80,000-word novel is roughly 470,000 characters, so on Multilingual v2 that is close to four months of Creator credits, or most of a month on Pro, before any re-casting. Changing a character's voice regenerates that character's lines, which uses credits again.
FullCastBook also charges in credits, counted by the characters voiced. Our plans are in the pricing section, and the audiobook cost calculator turns your word count into running time, credits and the plan that covers it.
Free plans and commercial use
ElevenLabs' help center says its Free plan doesn't include a commercial license, so audio made on it can't be used commercially, and public posts need to credit ElevenLabs. If you plan to sell the audiobook, budget for a paid plan from the start.
FullCastBook gives you free credits with no card, enough to hear your own cast on a short sample chapter. A full novel needs a paid plan.
Publishing to Audible and other stores
Neither tool changes the biggest rule in audiobook publishing. ACX's audio submission requirements, updated April 15, 2026, prohibit unauthorized text-to-speech and AI narration, although the same page says Audible is working to accept third-party TTS. Spotify accepts digital-voice narration when you label it as such, and other stores set their own rules, so check each one before you upload.
Which one should you choose?
Choose ElevenLabs if you want the biggest voice library and language list, sound effects and music in the same editor, or publishing to ElevenReader from the same account. Choose FullCastBook if your manuscript is a Word or text file, you need an M4B with chapter markers, or you want direction notes and a series cast built into the text.
The fairest test is the same chapter in both tools. Most of the difference is in how it sounds to you, and a chapter costs far less to try than a book. If you're also weighing an ElevenLabs alternative for audiobooks among the free platform tools, compare KDP Virtual Voice and Google Play auto-narration.
