In depth
Spotify audiobook creation tools, in short
Spotify audiobook creation tools are Spotify's own way to turn a manuscript into an audiobook: upload an EPUB in Spotify for Authors, choose a digital voice from ElevenLabs, review pronunciations, preview chapters and publish. The book goes live on Spotify, most within 72 hours, with a "Narrated by Digital Voice" label.
It's free, which is hard to beat. This page sets it next to a full-cast workflow using Spotify's own help center, product page and author blog, checked in October 2026, and says where each one fits.
What Spotify's audiobook creation tools offer
Spotify announced the tools at its Investor Day on May 21, 2026, opened an invite-only beta in June and said on September 9 that the beta had expanded. The workflow is short: upload, choose a voice and preview it, check how names, places and acronyms are pronounced, listen to chapter previews, then submit. Spotify publishes the book for you.
There's no exclusivity. Spotify says you're free to distribute the audiobook elsewhere, for example through Voices by INaudio. For a US author with an English EPUB, it's a fast, free route onto Spotify with an ElevenLabs voice.
The limits: one voice, US only, EPUB only
The beta is available in the US and in English, it's limited to five audiobook projects per account, and you need a verified payment profile and to accept Spotify's Audiobook Creation Opt In Terms. The input is an EPUB manuscript. For books in other languages, Spotify points authors to ElevenLabs Studio instead, a separate, paid product.
Spotify's pages describe choosing one digital voice for the book and say nothing about character voices, so the same voice reads the narration and every line of dialogue. They also don't say whether you can download the generated audio files.
Where Spotify's tools win
Be fair to it: Spotify's tools win on price, since they're free; on effort, since publishing to Spotify happens for you; and on a dedicated pronunciation review that checks names, places and acronyms before the book goes out. FullCastBook has no separate pronunciation step. If a name comes out wrong, you respell it in the text and regenerate that line.
Spotify AI audiobook creation with a full cast
FullCastBook starts from the same EPUB, or from a DOCX, a PDF with a text layer or a TXT file, and builds a cast. It finds the chapters, works out who says every line, and gives the narrator and each character a distinct voice. You can direct a line with a note such as [whisper, like sharing a secret] or a sound tag such as [laugh], and regenerate a single line without redoing the chapter.
Then you export: an M4B with chapter markers, one MP3 for the whole book, or a ZIP with a file per chapter. Those files are yours, so the same production can go to Spotify and to any other store that accepts AI narration. Credits are counted by the characters voiced; the plans are in the pricing section.
Publishing on Spotify either way
You don't need Spotify's tools to be on Spotify. Spotify for Authors accepts audiobooks narrated by digital voices from providers such as Google Play Books and ElevenLabs. Choose + Upload audiobook, add your details and audio, and tick "This audiobook uses digital voice narration"; Spotify adds a short sentence to the description so listeners know.
Uploading is free, has no limit on the number of audiobooks, is non-exclusive, and you keep full ownership. Spotify takes MP3, WAV or FLAC and asks for clearly titled chapters, so the ZIP of chapter files is the easiest export to start from. Titles usually go live within three business days. One difference to know: Spotify doesn't currently share digital-voice audiobooks with its referral partners.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Spotify's tools if you're a US author with an English EPUB, one voice suits the book, and Spotify is your main store: it's free and it publishes for you. Choose FullCastBook as your Spotify audiobook creator alternative if your book has a cast worth hearing, you write in another language, you need more than five books, or you want files you can take to other stores.
