In depth
KDP Virtual Voice vs a full-cast audiobook you own
If you're searching for a KDP Virtual Voice alternative, you've probably hit one of its limits: no invitation, a book that doesn't qualify, readers outside the U.S., or a story with too many characters for one voice. Virtual Voice is Amazon's free beta that turns an eligible Kindle ebook into an Audible audiobook read by a synthetic voice. FullCastBook makes a full-cast audiobook from your manuscript and hands you the files.
This page compares the two using Amazon KDP's help pages and the Virtual Voice beta terms, checked on October 20, 2026. Where Amazon doesn't say something, we say so instead of guessing.
What KDP Virtual Voice is, and who can use it
KDP Virtual Voice creates an Amazon virtual voice audiobook, listed as an "Audible audiobook with Virtual Voice", from a Kindle ebook you've already published. In Virtual Voice Studio you choose from more than 80 voices, add pauses, adjust speed, fix pronunciation and set where the reading starts. It's free for authors at this time and pays a 40% royalty during the beta, with list prices from $3.99 to $14.99.
Access is the catch. KDP's help pages still describe an invite-only beta for eligible ebooks, which Amazon plans to expand over time. The ebook must be live (not on pre-order), reflowable with a table of contents, not public domain and not already on Audible, including through ACX, and its main language must be English, Spanish, Italian or French. Amazon also says it can decline an audiobook or remove it from sale at any time.
It isn't niche, either. TechCrunch counted more than 50,000 Audible titles narrated by Virtual Voice in May 2025.
Virtual voice audiobooks: rules, exclusivity and file ownership
Three terms matter if you plan to sell beyond Amazon. Virtual voice audiobooks are distributed only in the U.S. marketplace. If the ebook is enrolled in KDP Select, its audio edition must be exclusive to Audible as well. And the beta terms say that while you keep the copyright in your book, Amazon keeps ownership of the Virtual Voice edition file.
In practice, an Amazon virtual voice audiobook lives on Audible, Amazon.com, Amazon Music Unlimited and Alexa. That reach is the reason to use it. It also means the audio itself is Amazon's: you can't take that file to another store.
Why authors look for a KDP Virtual Voice alternative
The reasons usually come down to five: you haven't been invited; your ebook doesn't qualify (a pre-order, a fixed-layout book, a public-domain title or a language outside the four); you want listeners outside the U.S.; you want a file you can upload to Spotify or sell from your own website; or your book is dialogue-heavy and one voice flattens it.
FullCastBook works from the manuscript instead of a live listing, so none of those eligibility rules apply. Upload a DOCX, an EPUB, a PDF with a text layer or a TXT file, or paste the text. Files must be DRM-free, which means your own manuscript, not a Kindle book you bought. The manuscript to audiobook guide walks through it from the file you wrote.
Full cast vs one virtual voice
Virtual voice audiobooks are read in one default voice. You can switch the voice for a whole chapter, which suits alternating points of view, but there's no way to give each character their own voice inside a scene.
FullCastBook works out who says every line, gives the narrator and each character a distinct voice, and lets you direct a line with a note in brackets such as [whisper, like sharing a secret] or a sound tag like [sigh]. In a two-person argument or a party of six adventurers, listeners always know who is talking, and the same cast carries over to the next book in a series.
Where else to publish an AI-narrated audiobook
Rules differ by store. Spotify accepts audiobooks with digital voice narration through Spotify for Authors: tick "This audiobook uses digital voice narration" when you upload, and Spotify adds a line to the description saying so. Uploading is free and non-exclusive, and Spotify takes MP3, WAV or FLAC files with clearly titled chapters.
Audible is the exception. ACX's audio submission requirements, updated April 15, 2026, say titles must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized, so an AI audiobook made elsewhere can't go to Audible through ACX today. For every other store, check its current policy on AI narration before you upload.
Can you use both?
Read the terms first. If your ebook is in KDP Select, its audio edition must stay exclusive to Audible, so a second audio edition elsewhere is out. Outside KDP Select, the terms we read only rule out books that already have an Audible audiobook, so a Virtual Voice edition on Audible and a full-cast edition in other stores could sit side by side. Whether that fits your plans and contracts is your call.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Virtual Voice if you've been invited, your ebook qualifies, and U.S. Audible listeners are your market: it's free, and it's Amazon's own route onto Audible. Choose FullCastBook as your KDP Virtual Voice alternative if you want a voice per character, a file you own, or stores and countries beyond Amazon's U.S. marketplace.
