Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

爱丽丝向咧嘴笑的柴郡猫问路——结果什么也没问到。

The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought; still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt it ought to be treated with respect.

Cheshire Puss, would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?

Cheshire CatSnik狡黠

That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.

I don't much care where—

Cheshire CatSnik狡黠

Then it doesn't matter which way you go.

—so long as I get somewhere.

Cheshire CatSnik狡黠

Oh, you're sure to do that, if you only walk long enough.

分步指南

How to move a book from Balabolka to FullCastBook

Bring the same text file; the casting is done for you.

  1. Upload the same file

Add the EPUB, PDF with a text layer, DOCX, TXT or Markdown file you'd open in Balabolka, or paste the text. Files must be DRM-free.
  2. Check chapters and speakers

Chapters and the speaker of every line are detected for you. Change any line that's given to the wrong character.
  3. Cast and direct

Pick a narrator and a voice per character, then add [whisper] or [laugh] where a line needs it. No voice tags to type.
  4. Export the audiobook

Download an M4B with chapter markers, one MP3 for the whole book, or a ZIP with an MP3 per chapter.

Balabolka Alternative

What changes with FullCastBook

What a Balabolka alternative in the browser adds when the goal is an audiobook.

  • No Windows required

It runs in the browser on a Mac, a Linux machine, a Chromebook or a PC, with nothing to install.
  • Casting without voice tags

Speakers are worked out from the dialogue and each one gets a distinct voice, so you don't mark every line by hand.
  • Voices already there

Standard voices from Google Gemini and premium voices from ElevenLabs, ready in the studio. The text's language is detected for you.
  • M4B with chapter markers

Chapters come from the contents page or headings, so each marker lands where the book's chapter starts.

Balabolka vs FullCastBook: two ways to turn text into audio

If you're looking for a Balabolka alternative, you already know what Balabolka is good at: it's free, it opens almost any document, and it saves the text as audio with whatever voices your Windows PC has. People usually start looking elsewhere for one of three reasons. They're on a Mac or Linux, they want newer AI voices without installing anything, or they want a novel's characters to sound different without tagging every line by hand.

This page compares the two using Balabolka's own description page, voices page and FAQ on cross-plus-a.com, checked on October 21, 2026. FullCastBook is a browser studio built only for audiobooks, so the comparison sticks to that job.

What Balabolka does well

Balabolka is freeware, and its author says it will stay that way. It reads 27 document formats, from EPUB, MOBI and FB2 to DOCX, PDF and DjVu, and it can read the clipboard aloud. A portable version runs from a USB drive, a command-line utility saves text as audio with no interface at all, and a separate tool extracts the text from documents.

It's also a more capable converter than many people realise. Its FAQ says it can split a text and save each part as its own audio file, write MP3 or MP4/M4A files with chapters named from bookmarks, and save SRT or LRC subtitles next to the audio. You can change rate and pitch per voice and correct pronunciation with substitution rules written as regular expressions. If one clear voice reading a book is all you need, Balabolka does that for free.

Windows-only, with the voices on your PC

Balabolka's download box lists Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11. It works through the Microsoft Speech API, so it speaks with the SAPI voices installed on that computer, and even the portable version needs at least one voice installed. Its voices page also points to a separate adapter that adds Microsoft's online natural voices.

There's no Mac version on its pages, and the FAQ answers the Linux question with links to third-party setup guides. So a practical Balabolka alternative for Mac is one that doesn't depend on Windows voices at all. FullCastBook runs in the browser: you upload the file, and the voices are already there.

Converting a book: one voice vs a cast

Balabolka can switch voices partway through a text, so a Balabolka audiobook doesn't have to use a single voice. Its FAQ shows a tag such as {{Voice=Jenny}} placed before the words that voice should read. That works for a short dialogue, but in a novel it means finding every line each character speaks, tagging it yourself, and switching back to the narrator afterwards.

FullCastBook does the attribution for you. It reads the manuscript, works out who speaks each line, and gives the narrator and every character a distinct voice. A short passage might come back cast like this: Narrator: "The lamp guttered as the door swung open." Mira [whisper, like sharing a secret]: "Don't move. He's still on the stairs." Old Tam [gruff, half asleep]: "Whoever it is can wait till morning."

Each speaker gets their own voice, and the bracketed notes change how the line is delivered. If a line goes to the wrong person, change its speaker; if one line sounds off, regenerate just that line. The multi-voice audiobook guide shows the casting step in more detail.

Chapters and M4B

Both tools can make chaptered audio, in different ways. Balabolka takes chapter names from bookmarks you set and writes them into MP3 or MP4/M4A files, or splits a text into separate files. As a Balabolka alternative that sets chapters up for you, FullCastBook finds the chapters from the book's contents page or headings when you upload it, then exports an M4B with a marker for every chapter, one MP3 for the whole book, or a ZIP with one MP3 per chapter.

For listeners' audiobook apps, M4B keeps the chapters and their place in one file; for stores, chapter MP3s are what most ask for. The M4B vs MP3 guide explains which to use where, and the M4B audiobook maker page covers the export.

Cost: free vs credits

Balabolka costs nothing, which is hard for any Balabolka alternative with cloud AI voices to beat. The voices you use with it are the ones your PC provides or the ones you add yourself, so check the terms of any voice before you sell audio made with it.

If you want a Balabolka free alternative to try first, FullCastBook charges credits for the characters voiced and gives you free credits on sign-up with no card, enough to hear your own cast on a short sample chapter. A full novel needs a paid plan: see pricing, or put your word count into the audiobook cost calculator. You own the audio you export and can sell it under our terms.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Balabolka if you're on Windows, one voice is enough, and you want a free tool that opens dozens of formats, writes subtitles and runs from a USB drive.

Choose FullCastBook as your Balabolka alternative if you're on a Mac, Linux or a Chromebook, if you want AI voices without installing any, or if the book has characters who should each sound different. 常见问题

Balabolka Alternative:常见问题

没找到答案?发邮件到 support@fullcastbook.com

Is there a Balabolka alternative for Mac?

Balabolka's own pages list Windows 7 to 11 only, and its FAQ sends Linux users to third-party guides. FullCastBook runs in the browser on a Mac, Linux, Windows or a Chromebook, with the AI voices built in.

Can Balabolka make an audiobook?

Yes, read by one voice or by voices you switch with tags. It saves text as audio, can split it into several files, and can write MP3 or MP4/M4A files with chapters named from bookmarks. Its pages don't describe detecting characters or casting voices for you.

Does Balabolka support different voices for characters?

Only by hand: you place a voice tag such as {{Voice=Jenny}} before the text that voice should read. FullCastBook detects who speaks each line and gives every character a distinct voice automatically.

Is there a free Balabolka alternative?

Balabolka itself is the free option. FullCastBook gives you free credits on sign-up with no card, enough to hear a short sample chapter with a full cast; a whole book needs a paid plan, listed on the pricing page.

Can I export M4B?

From FullCastBook, yes: an M4B with a marker for each chapter, plus one MP3 or a ZIP of chapter MP3s. Balabolka's FAQ describes chapters in MP3 and MP4/M4A files and doesn't mention M4B by name.

Which files can I bring over from Balabolka?

FullCastBook takes EPUB, PDF with a text layer, DOCX, TXT, Markdown and pasted text, all DRM-free. Balabolka opens more formats, such as MOBI, FB2 and DjVu, so convert a DRM-free file of that kind to EPUB first; the Calibre guide shows how.
